DAY 5 - Regional Transformation

February 25 - Wednesday

Jesus launched his message at the crossroads of the world. The foot of the Sermon on the Mount is where the roads to Africa, Asia, and Europe meet. Jesus took his message to the Gates of Hell a site even Emperor Nero visited. Jesus has a plan for world wide change and you are part of it.

  • Hike up to the ancient Decapolis city of Susita (Hippos), perched high above the Sea of Galilee with stunning views over the region of Jesus' ministry, and enjoy the panoramic ruins at the top.

  • Hike the rapids of Banias Falls, that inspired King David to write Psalm 42 and later Jesus would walk on his way up to Mount Hermon, the place of the Transfiguration.

  • Journey an hour north to Caesarea Philippi and touch the red bedrock where Peter stood, see the literal Gates of Hell, and the spiritual significance of announcing on this spot the church--the "called out ones."

  • Discover the newly unearthed archaeological site of Beitsaida, home of Peter, Andrew, Philip, and Nathaniel.

  • The Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus drew from the local scenery to illustrate the Sermon on the Mount.

Meditate scripture

  • The Year of the Lord’s Favor

    1The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,

    because the Lord has anointed me

    to proclaim good news to the poor.

    He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,

    to proclaim freedom for the captives

    and release from darkness for the prisoners,

    2to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor

    and the day of vengeance of our God,

    to comfort all who mourn,

    3and provide for those who grieve in Zion—

    to bestow on them a crown of beauty

    instead of ashes,

    the oil of joy

    instead of mourning,

    and a garment of praise

    instead of a spirit of despair.

    They will be called oaks of righteousness,

    a planting of the Lord

    for the display of his splendor.

    4They will rebuild the ancient ruins

    and restore the places long devastated;

    they will renew the ruined cities

    that have been devastated for generations.

    5Strangers will shepherd your flocks;

    foreigners will work your fields and vineyards.

    6And you will be called priests of the Lord,

    you will be named ministers of our God.

    You will feed on the wealth of nations,

    and in their riches you will boast.

    7Instead of your shame

    you will receive a double portion,

    and instead of disgrace

    you will rejoice in your inheritance.

    And so you will inherit a double portion in your land,

    and everlasting joy will be yours.

    8“For I, the Lord, love justice;

    I hate robbery and wrongdoing.

    In my faithfulness I will reward my people

    and make an everlasting covenant with them.

    9Their descendants will be known among the nations

    and their offspring among the peoples.

    All who see them will acknowledge

    that they are a people the Lord has blessed.”

    10I delight greatly in the Lord;

    my soul rejoices in my God.

    For he has clothed me with garments of salvation

    and arrayed me in a robe of his righteousness,

    as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest,

    and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

    11For as the soil makes the sprout come up

    and a garden causes seeds to grow,

    so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness

    and praise spring up before all nations.

  • Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness

    1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be temptedby the devil. 2After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

    4Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

    5Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6“If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

    “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,

    and they will lift you up in their hands,

    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’”

    7Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

    8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9“All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

    10Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’”

    11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

    Jesus Begins to Preach

    12When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

    15“Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,

    the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,

    Galilee of the Gentiles—

    16the people living in darkness

    have seen a great light;

    on those living in the land of the shadow of death

    a light has dawned.”

    17From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

    Jesus Calls His First Disciples

    18As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19“Come, follow me,”Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”20At once they left their nets and followed him.

    21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

    Jesus Heals the Sick

    23Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them. 25Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
